Through conservation efforts, the populations of Canada geese have surged in the past few decades and without the proper measures, can become a nuisance in our local parks. But there are nonlethal ways to keep populations at a manageable level, such as geese-chasing, egg-addling, and chemical sprays.
However, there is another method that many don't know is being used in Essex County: lethal gas. Last year, the county allowed the USDA to enter Branch Brook Park, Weequahic Park, and the Essex County Correctional Facility, round up all the geese there, and gas them in a chamber.
